Our Story

Annette Brandanger has worked in interdisciplinary settings between visual art and dance for many years. In this project, participants will be working in the spaces of Kunstbanken. The exhibitions displayed on the walls will serve as the starting point for the choreography.

Participants will be presented with various tasks that will help shape the choreography itself. At the same time, we will explore and play with the possibilities and limitations of working and dancing in a gallery space, engaging in exciting processes that will shape and develop us as performers, both individually and as an ensemble.

On the Symbiosis Between Visual Art and Dance

Both visual art and dance are constantly evolving, with boundaries being pushed and new forms of expression emerging. These two disciplines have a long history of inspiring and influencing each other across fields, creating a unique dialogue between movement and image.

The experimental climate of the 1960s and 1970s in the United States is often cited as a high point for socially transgressive and politically progressive art. It was within this context that much of the experimentation between visual art and dance took place. Artists and dancers of this era challenged conventional ideas, exploring the intersections of their mediums and creating performances that were both visually and physically compelling.

During this time, many artists began incorporating elements of dance into their visual work, while dancers drew inspiration from visual art to expand their choreography. The boundaries between the static and the dynamic were blurred, leading to collaborations that redefined how both art forms could be experienced. This interdisciplinary exchange allowed for a broader exploration of the body, space, and time, breaking away from traditional forms and opening up new possibilities for artistic expression.

The legacy of this symbiosis continues today, with contemporary artists and dancers continuing to explore the relationship between movement and visual representation. Whether through multimedia installations, live performances, or digital mediums, the connection between visual art and dance remains a fertile ground for innovation and experimentation. This ongoing dialogue enriches both art forms, demonstrating the enduring power of collaboration across creative disciplines.
